The Dolomites
Bizarre mountains and spectacular rocks - this is how the Dolomites have presented themselves for more than 250 million years. According to Reinhold Messner, "not the highest, but most beautiful mountains in the world" are spread over five Italian provinces and include the following masifes in South Tyrol: Sella Group, Rosengarten, Puez-Geisler, Schlern, Latemar, Pragser Dolomites and Sexten Dolomites. The highest summit is the Marmolada at 3.342 m.
Particularly characteristic of the Dolomites is the abrupt change between craggy rocks and smooth pastures. At sunset, the "bleaching mountains" shimmer - as the Dolomites are often called because of their dolomite rock, in a wonderful reddish light that makes the mountains seem almost unreal. Due to the special beauty and geology, the Dolomites were declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009.
